Friction is like fire. Sometime it is desirable and necessary, sometime it is undesirable. Because of friction we can walk, we can hold object, write on surface, we can stand. In presence of friction we can transmit motion of wheel via conveyor belt to another wheel. Friction opposes relative motion and dissipates power in form of heat energy. Due to friction there is wear and tear in parts of machines. Due to friction clothes, shoes, tyres of vehicles are warn out.

$(1)$ To reduce kinetic friction in machines lubricants are used.

$(2)$ Between moving parts of machines ball-bearing are used.

$(3)$ A thin cushion of air is maintained between solid surfaces in order to reduce friction which is shown in figure.
